GUMMY SMILE

A common concern among some individuals is the display of excessive gum tissue, colloquially known as a "gummy smile," when they smile. This condition is prevalent, affecting up to 15% of the population, and can result from the elevation of the upper lip above the upper teeth, exposing a disproportionate amount of gum tissue to teeth. The aesthetic imbalance can cause individuals to feel self-conscious about their smile, leading them to seek ways to conceal their gums and teeth when smiling.

One of the primary causes of a gummy smile is the hyperactivity of the muscle responsible for excessively elevating the upper lip when smiling. In some cases, a thin upper lip can further exacerbate the issue, resulting in even more gum exposure. Fortunately, a straightforward and effective solution involves the use of anti-wrinkle injections to reduce the activity of the muscle responsible for elevating the upper lip.

During treatment, small injections of botox will be administered at both sides of the nostril and nose-to-mouth fold junction to weaken the muscles. By blocking the chemical messages transmitted from the nerve to contract the muscle, the muscle remains in a resting state, preventing the excessive elevation of the upper lip and reducing the amount of gum tissue exposed when smiling.

Patients typically report noticeable changes within three to four days following the procedure, with aesthetically pleasing results achieved within 14 days. To maintain the results, treatment will need to be repeated every two to four months.
